California has too many wine grapes, and many growers were scrambling to find buyers in September 2003. Mesa Vineyard Management, managing 6,000 acres of Central Coast wine grapes for 15 clients, said several hundred acres of grapes may not be picked, and prices for some premium grapes might be only $300 a ton, far below the $600 to $1,000 a ton of previous years.
